Romania's 2012 wheat production down to 4.7 million tonnes
Romania's 2012 wheat production declined to 4.7 million tonnes compared to 5.79 million tonnes in 2011.
According to data presented by Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin on Friday (July 27), this year's wheat production stands at 2.6 tonnes per hectare, from 3.5 tonnes/hectare in 2011.
He dismissed data on the country's 2011 wheat harvest, presented by former agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabara in September 2011, as false. Tabara said last year the 2011 wheat production hit 7.2 million tonnes, up 24% on the year.
Constantin highlighted that, even though this year's wheat yield is lower than in 2011, Romania will be able to cover domestic needs. He added that only 200,000 tonnes of wheat have been exported this year.
