Hendrix Genetics starts sustainable shrimp production at breeding site in Ecuador

Hendrix Genetics has started the first cycle of sustainable shrimp production at a state-of-the art shrimp breeding site in Ecuador.

The Macrobio hatchery is making waves in the Ecuadorian shrimp industry due to its more sustainable approach to shrimp breeding, according to Hendrix Genetics.

The site was described as a "first to market with a closed cycle breeding operation, with concept of producing clean, specific pathogen resistant (SPR) shrimp," the company said. The project will help to improve and accelerate genetic progress within Ecuador's shrimp production industry.

With a strategy to support sustainable market growth, Hendrix Genetics partnered with Nutreco via its aquaculture division, Skretting, and Ecuacultivos, a medium-sized Ecuadorian shrimp farming business, to invest in upgrading the Macrobio hatchery.

The strategic breeding operation will offer solutions for challenges currently facing the region.

The  first generation of improved shrimp genetics produced will be ready by the end of the year. This will serve as an opportunity for local production to access the most advanced animal genetics, Hendrix Genetics said.
