Japan unlikely to trigger safeguard tariff against beef imports

Japan's government said it would likely forgo its safeguard tariffs against beef imports in August, which would have increased from 38.5 percent to 50 percent.

According to reports, Japan's Q2 beef import volume was certain to fall short of the standard for the safeguard tariff to be triggered.

The government used the safeguard system when it urgently needed to protect domestic industries from sudden surges in imports.

For beef, the safeguard tariff was automatically activated when accumulated amount of imported beef in a quarter increased by more than 17 percent from the same period the previous year.

However, industry reports stated that beef imports have rapidly increased since July, leading some experts to expect the safeguard tariff would probably be triggered after the July-September period.
