Barbados Agricultural Society launches $40,000 artificial insemination project to boost pork production

The Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), in collaboration with the country's Ministry of Agriculture, is set to embark on a BBD 40,000 (~BBD 19,800; BBD 1 = US$0.50) artificial insemination project aimed at enhancing pork production in Barbados, Barbados Today reported.

At a press conference held at the BAS headquarters in The Grotto St Michael, chief executive officer James Paul revealed that 100 doses of semen from Swine Genetics International, a US-based company, will be imported this week.

The programme is scheduled to be rolled out in two weeks' time.

To access the semen, interested farmers will need to pay BBD 75 (~US$37) per dose, with the initiative aiming to bolster the local swine population and increase annual slaughters from just under 30,000 to 50,000.
