Latest statistics by the China Feed Industry Association show that China's 2022 feed production totaled 302.234 million tonnes, a 3.0% increase over 2021.

However, the output of concentrated feed and premixed feed had, in fact, dropped significantly. Meanwhile, feed consumption in China has decreased.

eFeedLink's statistics show that China's output of aquafeed in 2021 was 23.3 million tonnes and increased by 4.28% to 24.3 million tonnes in 2022.

Last year, there were 1,682 aquafeed producers in China, a slight decrease from the 1,700 in 2021. The number of 'pure' aquafeed producers in 2022 was 710, expanding substantially from over 660 in 2021.

China's feed producers are divided into 'super large' feed groups with an annual output of more than one million tonnes, large feed groups with an annual output of 200,000 tonnes to one million tonnes and small and medium-sized feed producers with an annual output of fewer than 200,000 tonnes.

In 2022, there were more than 440 super-large feed producers that produced aquafeed, lower than 470 in 2021. Nevertheless, aquafeed output increased from 12 million tonnes in 2021 to 14 million tonnes in 2022.

The number of large aquafeed producers remained at 100 in 2022, producing a combined output of 2.47 million tonnes.

The number of small and medium-sized feed producers dropped slightly from 1,149 in 2021 to 1,141 in 2022, but the output of aquafeed increased from 7.07 million tonnes to 7.66 million tonnes.

Most small and medium pure feed producers in the aquaculture sector have an output of 50,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes. In 2022, the number of feed producers with an aquafeed output of 50,000 tonnes to 200,000 tonnes increased to 28, from 21 in 2021, while the combined output grew from 1.5 million tonnes to 1.65 million tonnes.

Last year, there were four aquafeed producers with an output of more than one million tonnes in China, adding to a combined output of 10.13 million tonnes. This accounted for 41.96% of China's aquafeed production. Among these four producers, Tongwei saw the largest increase.

There were 11 feed producers with an output of more than 200,000 tonnes of aquafeed last year. The combined output of these producers dropped to 4.95 million tonnes in 2022, compared with 5.28 million tonnes in 2021. Their market shares in the aquafeed sector fell from 22.66% to 20.37%.
