Authorities in Kozhikode, India, on alert of potential bird flu outbreak

The district administration of Kozhikode, India, has recently been placed on high alert following reports of suspected avian influenza at a poultry farm in the city.

According to reports, 300 birds at a private poultry farm were found dead and test results of samples sent to the regional laboratory in Thiruvananthapuram were positive for bird flu.

However, the outbreak will be declared officially only after confirmation from the National High Security Lab at Bhopal.

The emerging situation came at a time when bird flu has recently been reported in other Indian states.

The Kozhikode District Collector has convened an emergency meeting and directed surveillance within a 10km area around the affected farm. Other farms in nearby areas have been ordered to shut down temporarily.
