Chilean salmon firm to build new recirculation centre

Salmones Maullín, a subsidiary of AquaChile, plans to build a new recirculation centre in the town of Rio Grande, municipality of Cochamó in the Los Lagos Region.

According to the Declaration of Environmental Impact (DEI) filed with the National Environment Commission (Conama), the project will require investments of around US$26 million.

In the new facility, equipped with water recirculation systems, the company will perform all salmon production operations from the initial deposit of eggs, hatching and fry, until obtaining disease-free smolts.

The centre will use a technology that allows the control of production parameters and environmental variables in each sector independently. Also, Salmones Maullín will apply technology for disinfecting water inlets and outlets.

The idea is to install ground-based ponds with an annual production of 24 million smolts. At the moment, the company awaits the DEI rating process by Conama.
