Ukraine grain output fall to 43 million tonnes due to drought

Ukraine's 2012 general grain harvest is expected to reach 43 million tonnes level due to the continuing dry weather conditions throughout territory of the country, declared Tatyana Adamenko, Head of the agricultural meteorology department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, on July 24, according to APK-Inform.

As a reminder, the initial forecast of the Hydrometeorological Centre totalled 43.5-44.5 million tonnes, added the expert.

According T.Adamenko, the Hydrometeorological Centre also revised its forecast for corn harvest, reducing it from the level of 22.8 million tonnes to 21 million tonnes. The expert did not exclude the probability of further reduction of the forecast, due to excessively hot weather.

According T.Adamenko, it would be cost effective to increase corn usage for green fodder. The harvest volumes of sunflower seed in Ukraine is expected to reach 8.5 million tonnes.

According to forecasts of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Centre, in the current year the average yield of grains will be reduced by 20-25% compared to last year. In particular, in the Steppe oblasts of Ukraine the index will reduce by 30-40%. At the same time, in the northern and western oblasts the yield is likely to remain at the same level as last year.

According to forecasts of T.Adamenko, since July 24 Ukraine faced beginning of the next hot season. The anticyclone will affect the weather, so the precipitations are not expected until the end of the month, except of several western regions. The other territory will face hot and dry weather conditions.
