USDA: China's latest avian flu outbreak in Xinjiang
The USDA, in a report released July 24 2006, outlined the latest highly pathogenic avian influenza situation in China's western Xinjiang region.
The report noted that China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) had notified the US Embassy and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) of an outbreak of the H5N1 strain in Yinglanganawati District of Akesu City, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the 14th such case in the country this year.
A total of 3,045 chickens were infected and had died, and another 356,976 chickens were destroyed.
Xinjiang is a minor poultry producing province. Annual slaughter at about 74 million birds accounts for less than 1 percent of the total slaughter in China.
