Iran produces over 33,000 tonnes of red meat in third month of year

In the third month of this year, Iran produced 33,167 tonnes of red meat, Tehran Times reported.

Beef and veal dominated the country's red meat output during this period, with 18,310 tonnes. This was followed by lamb and mutton with 11,626 tonnes, goat meat with 2,468 tonnes, and red meat from other livestock with 763 tonnes.

The supply of red meat in the third month of this year fell 28% compared to the same month in the previous year.

Iran is among the leading consumers of red meat in the West Asia region, with lamb being the most sought after. However, per capita consumption in Iran is around a third of that seen in countries like the US and Australia, mainly due to the prohibition of pork in Islamic law.

A significant portion of Iran's red meat imports comes from countries like Brazil, where Iranian supervisors directly control culling methods to ensure compliance with religious rules.
