Australia's Queensland state proposes reform in aquaculture industry

A draft report by Australia's Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) suggests new aquaculture development areas could be set up in central and northern part of the state, ABC reports.

The report recommends reform in regulations for the AUD80 million (US$75.30 million) industry to better reach its potential and attract more investment. The QCA has recommended earmarking development areas for land-based aquaculture spanning 450 hectares.

The Australian Prawn Farmers Association welcomed the report, but said roadblocks remain. "We believe we need a mutli-departmental taskforce, including federal agencies like GBRMPA, relevant state agencies and, most importantly, industry, to help identify zones and remove barriers that will stifle investment opportunities."
