Close to 30,000 pigs in Serbia dead due to ASF

Nearly 30,000 pigs have died or been culled in recent weeks in Serbia after several outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF), the agriculture ministry said on July 21.

Serbia, which currently has around 2.2 million pigs on its farms, regularly faces episodes of the virus.

Agriculture Minister Dragan Glamocic told a parliamentary committee that around 29,200 pigs had been culled or had died due to the virus during this latest episode.

The main outbreaks are in the regions of Srem and Macva in the northwest, as well as in the Belgrade region, according to a statement from the agriculture ministry. More than 50 villages are affected.

The authorities' "absolute priority" is to try to contain the spread of the virus in the Macva region, which has nearly 300,000 pigs, according to the ministry.

In neighbouring Croatia, which is also facing ASF, more than 3,700 animals have been culled since the beginning of the year, according to official figures.
