A first occurrence of African swine fever was detected in Ukraine this week. The following report contains an overview of the disease situation.

EUROPE

1.  First occurrence of African swine fever virus detected in Ukraine

A first occurrence of African swine fever virus was detected in Ukraine, the OIE reports.

The information was received by the OIE on July 18 from Dr. Andrii Zhuk, First Deputy Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer production, International Cooperation of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, UKR Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, Kiev, Ukraine.

The outbreak event was reported to have started on August 30, 2016, with one outbreak reported in Khar'kov. One fatal case was identified in swine, resulting in 7 others becoming susceptible which were all destroyed. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.

Control measures, included movement control inside the country, disinfection, traceability, dipping or spraying for control of vectors or parasites, quarantine, surveillance within and outside containment and protection zones, official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste, and zoning. Vaccination is permitted and no treatment was given to affected animals.

2.  Reoccurrence of African swine fever virus detected in Poland

Reoccurrence of African swine fever virus was detected in Poland, the OIE reports.

The information was received by the OIE on July 19 from Dr. Pawel Niemczuk, Chief Veterinary Officer, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Varsovie, Poland.

The outbreak event was reported to have started on May 22, 2014, with two outbreaks reported in Lubelskie. 11 cases were identified in swine, resulting in 60 becoming susceptible, five dying and all remaining destroyed. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.

Control measures, included movement control inside the country, disinfection, screening, traceability, quarantine, official destruction of animal products, official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste, surveillance within containment and protection zones, control of wildlife reservoirs, and zoning. Vaccination is permitted and no treatment was given to affected animals.

ASIA

3.  Reoccurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus detected in Chinese Taipei

Reoccurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, serotype H5N2, was detected in Chinese Taipei, the OIE reports.

The information was received by the OIE on July 17 from Dr. Tai-Hwa Shih, Chief Veterinary Officer, Deputy Director General, Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine Council of Agriculture Executive Yuan, Ministry of Agriculture, Taipei, Chinese Taipei.

The outbreak event was reported to have started on January 11, 2015, with six outbreaks reported in Kaohsiung city and Yunlin county. 7,715 fatal cases were identified in birds, resulting in 88,063 others becoming susceptible which were all destroyed. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.

Control measures, included movement control inside the country, disinfection, screening, quarantine and zoning. Vaccination is prohibited and no treatment was given to affected animals.

AMERICAS

4.  Reoccurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy detected in the United States of America

Reoccurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was detected in the United States of America, the OIE reports.

The information was received by the OIE on July 18 from Dr. John Clifford, Official Delegate, Chief Trade Advisor, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Washington, United States of America.

The outbreak event was reported to have started on Juy 16, with one outbreak reported in Alabama. One fatal case was identified in cattle. The source of the outbreaks was unknown.

Control measures, included screening, traceability, and official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste. Vaccination is prohibited and no treatment was given to affected animals.
