EU fails to authorise Monsanto's GM corn

An EU expert panel has failed to authorise the sales of Monsanto's GM corn, and the debate will now head to a higher level with ambassadors and ministers.

Monsanto spokeswoman Danielle Stuart expressed her disappointment at the outcome, which occurred despite the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) gave a favourable scientific opinion on the product last month.

Earlier this year, Germany banned the use and sale of the GM corn, Mon810, saying it is harmful to the environment. France, Austria, Hungary, Greece and Luxembourg also banned the corn borer-resistant corn.
