Pakistan's chicken industry suffers losses from rains

Heavy rain over the weekend in Pakistan may have caused losses of up to 450,000 poultry, though there is a different account of the possible losses.

About 400,000 to 450,000 birds were washed away in heavy rains at farms located at Hub, Gujjo, Super Highway, Kathore, Gadab, Angara Goth, Pipri, Dhabeji, etc., according to Abdul Maroof Siddiqui, chairman Press and Publication committee of Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA).

However, General Secretary of Karachi Wholesalers Poultry Association (KWPA), Kamal Akhtar Siddiqui, said about 100,000 to 125,000 live birds died from the heavy rains.

Poultry supplies from affected areas had been suspended due to bad road conditions, and Kamal expect prices to remain the same despite the short supply, while Abdul expects the impact of production losses to be evident in the next few days.

The retail price set by KWPA was PKR118 per kg for live birds and PKR200 per kg of meat. But retailers are now charging PKR210 to PKR230 per kg of meat, depending on the areas.

Meanwhile, farms have no power and water, which could be a serious threat to production.
