China overtakes US as Vietnam's top seafood importer

Vietnam earned US$1.1 billion from seafood exports to China in the first half of the year, up 45% from the same period last year, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said on July 17.

With this surge, China has overtaken the US to become Vietnam's largest seafood importer for the first time.

Vietnam's seafood export revenue to the US rose 18% over last year to US$905 million. In May alone, Vietnam earned US$195 million from exporting seafood to the US, marking a 61% increase compared to April and the highest monthly value since the beginning of the year.

However, following this sudden spike, the US market quickly cooled down. In June, Vietnam's seafood exports to the US dropped 18% year-on-year.

Overall, in the first half of the year, Vietnam's total seafood export value fetched US$4.4 billion, up 7% from 2024.
