African swine fever outbreaks in Romania decreasing
African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks in Romania, four of them on commercial farms, went down to 261 as of July 10 from 609 active cases in January, according to the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority, pig333.com reported.
The number, however, is up compared with the 55 actives cases in June 2019, the report added.
The report said that since July 31, 2017, when ASF was first reported in the country, 3,718 ASF cases have been diagnosed in wild boars, and farmers have been compensated 441 million Romanian leu (US$104 million) for their losses to date.
It was earlier reported by Pig Progress that in the first quarter of this year, the majority of the 214 ASF infections confirmed on farms in Europe were in Romania, and mostly were backyard farms.
Ever since the first outbreaks of ASF in Romania in 2017, over 600,000 pigs have been culled.
