China's Jiangxi province ships first frozen pork export to Hong Kong in shift away from live pig trade

The 15-tonne inaugural shipment from Ganzhou marks a breakthrough for a province that has historically exported only live pigs, with streamlined customs clearance enabling the transition.

China's Jiangxi province has completed its first export of frozen pork to Hong Kong, with a 15-tonne shipment from a food company in Dayu County, Ganzhou city cleared by Nanchang Customs on 18 July 2026 - marking a structural shift from the province's long-standing reliance on live pig exports.

Ganzhou, known as a key live pig supply base for Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, has a well-established pig farming and slaughter processing industry. However, frozen pork exports had previously been blocked by complex import standard requirements from the Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, strict full-chain regulatory controls and insufficient cold-chain customs infrastructure.

Nanchang Customs said it worked with the exporting company to establish routine veterinary drug residue monitoring systems and a closed-loop African swine fever prevention protocol aligned with Hong Kong's meat import regulations. A dedicated fresh cold-chain green channel was also set up to significantly reduce customs clearance time.

Liu Yawei, General Manager of the exporting company, said the efficient clearance process gave the business confidence to pursue further overseas orders. "From live pig exports to frozen meat exports, this greatly enhances our flexibility in overseas sales, and subsequent order volumes are expected to expand steadily," he said.
