Indonesia explores China and Middle East export markets to absorb domestic poultry oversupply

The Ministry of Agriculture is coordinating with the National Nutrition Agency to ensure the MBG school meal programme absorbs surplus chicken and eggs when farm-gate prices fall.

Indonesia's Ministry of Agriculture is actively exploring export opportunities for poultry products to China and the Middle East as a long-term measure to manage domestic oversupply and support poultry farmer incomes, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono said on 18 July 2026.

Sudaryono described the current oversupply of chicken and eggs as a reflection of the country's strong production capacity rather than a structural problem, but said the key challenge lay in managing distribution and maintaining supply-demand balance in the domestic market. "This is actually a good problem to have. The products are readily available. It is just a matter of how we manage supply, demand, and distribution to ensure stocks are distributed evenly across the country," he said.

The deputy minister said securing export market access depends not only on commercial considerations but also on diplomatic relations, and that the government is continuing to strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation to open additional international markets for Indonesian agricultural products.

Domestically, the ministry is coordinating with the National Nutrition Agency to ensure the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme prioritises the absorption of local chicken and eggs, particularly when farm-gate prices come under pressure. National average broiler farm-gate prices recovered to Rp21,736 per kilogram as of 14 July, up 4.11% week-on-week, partly supported by the resumption of the MBG programme alongside the start of the new school term.
