Taiwan to receive first Paraguayan chicken shipment of 150 tonnes as bilateral agricultural trade expands

Paraguay's annual chicken export volume of around 10,000 tonnes is expected to have limited impact on Taiwan's domestic market, which consumes approximately 880,000 tonnes per year.

Taiwan is set to receive its first shipment of chicken meat from Paraguay, with Paraguayan President Santiago Peña confirming the dispatch of an initial 150 metric tonne consignment - a market opening announced during his visit to Taipei in May 2026.

José Han, Director-General of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs at Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the shipment was expected to enter the domestic market soon, though details on transport mode and product type were not yet available.

The chicken import marks an expansion of an already significant bilateral agricultural trade relationship. Taiwan is Paraguay's largest pork export market by a wide margin, purchasing US$48.49 million worth of pork in 2025, equivalent to 87% of Paraguay's total pork exports. Taiwan also ranked as the second-largest market for Paraguayan beef offal after Russia, importing 6,065 metric tonnes valued at US$20.71 million in 2025.

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture said in May that Paraguayan chicken imports are expected to have only a limited impact on the domestic market. Paraguay exports approximately 10,000 tonnes of chicken annually, a small volume relative to Taiwan's annual chicken consumption of around 880,000 tonnes.
