Indonesia to develop modern shrimp farming hub
Plans are underway for a new shrimp farming hub in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The Indonesian Aquaculture Society (MAI)'s South Sulawesi branch and Hadji Kalla Foundation have agreed to develop the US$6,953 project, in hopes of the area becoming a business incubator for the development of modern shrimp farming.
According to project developers, the technology is capable of producing 150 tonnes of shrimp per hectare, for each farming season, which lasts for a period of four months. A total of 1,000 to 3,000 cubic metres of concrete ponds would be used.
In future, the units can generate an approximate US$2,000 to US$2,800 in profits per harvest.
