More EU beef to come from dairy herd, report says

The December 2014 EU herd survey shows the beef herd is 290,000 head down from 2010, while the dairy herd has grown by about the same amount, according to the latest Short-Term Outlook for EU arable crops, dairy and meat markets in 2015 and 2016.

According to the report, in 2015, total EU beef production could rise further by 1.4%, as EU production capacity has risen and because of the impact of the herd changes.

In Q1 2015, beef production across the EU rose by 4.8%, as a number of countries slaughtered dairy cattle to prevent exceeding their milk quota. This was particularly seen in Poland, Italy, Estonia, Austria, Latvia and Luxembourg. Last year, Poland increased production by 77,000 tonnes.

Countries such as France and Spain have increased both their suckler and dairy herds. Spanish beef production rose by 9.3% in the first three months of the year with 12% coming from cows and 17% from bulls.
