Brazil privatizes its cattle tracing system
The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) is studying the possibility of privatising it cattle traceability system, the Brazilian Identification and Certification System of Bovine and Bubaline Origin (SISBOV).
The system was implemented in January 2001, to identify animals from different foot and mouth disease (FMD) status regions.
Two cattle associations, the Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders and the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock Farming are bidding for the right to administer the system.
The system operates through various independent agencies which collect the data for the SISBOV database.
The database currently provides 22 parameters on each animal, beginning at the packer and moving back to the property of origin. Participation in the programme have become compulsory since January 2007.
