Malaysia ventures into cattle rearing in west China

Malaysian companies are exploring the lesser known western region in China for cattle farms in a bid to fulfill the country's aspiration to become a major centre for providing halal food.

Through joint efforts with companies there, Malaysian companies hope to export halal beef to Malaysia and other places. Halal beef come from cattle slaughtered according to Islamic rites.

National SMI Consultative Centre (Nasmic) chief executive officer Leow Yit Kan said Malaysia is better attuned to the process because the country has the certification issued by Jakim (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia) which is recognized internationally. China has yet to acquire the certification, he said.

Further, Malaysia could also help in terms of marketing as the country holds a solid advantage in this aspect.

Malaysia, having been in the market longer, would be able to sell to Asia, US and Europe through its established network, he said.

Leow said that China is also encouraging investors to develop the north-eastern and western regions of the country to redress the imbalance between the coastal areas and the interior parts.

Furthermore, this year's Malaysia-China Economic Conference 2006 would focus on development in north-eastern and western China. The seminar is to be held in Malaysia in late August and aims to alert the Malaysian business community to new opportunities in China.
