Norway's crab exports continue to increase

Norwegian crab export value has increased by 40 percent last year compared with 2003 and the growth is continuing so far this year, according to the country's seafood industry.

Japan makes up the major market for Norwegian King crabs, with over 55 percent of the crabs exported there. The King crabs were also well received in the European and American markets.

Norwegian King crabs have been internationally popular because of their size, despite making up only about one percent of total crab catch in the world. A King crab from Norway had an average weight of 4.1 kilograms, while a crab from Alaska, the main catching country, had an average weight of about 3 kilograms, according to Norway's seafood industry.
