Russia's poultry industry protests against increase in quotas for Thai imports

The Russian Poultry Union has officially informed the government in its bid to prevent increasing quotas for Thai poultry imports. The government earlier made a draft ruling allowing an additional 50,000 tonnes of Thai poultry imports each year for five years. The increased quotas were needed as part of a settlement for delivery of Russian fighters to Thailand.

There were fears in the Russian poultry industry that this move would not only ruin market competition domestically, but might also bring the bird flu epidemic into the country.

Russia's domestic poultry consumption slightly exceeds 2 million tonnes with imported poultry covering exactly half of it. The import quota was 1.05 million tonnes.
