Vietnamese firm seeks approval for export of African swine fever vaccine

Nguyen Van Diep, director of AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company, has sought approval from Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for the export of the company's African swine fever (ASF) vaccine, Saigon news reported.

Nguyen Van Diep urged the Vietnam Department of Animal Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to end the monitoring programme and allow the ASF vaccine to be widely used and exported.

The company has committed to producing and supplying high-quality vaccines that meet safety standards and promised to collaborate with specialised agencies to address any issues during the vaccination process.

Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a meeting with NAVETCO Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company (NAVETCO) and AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company to discuss the results of the world's first swine fever vaccine trials on a small scale, focusing on safety and efficacy.

During the trials, AVAC Vietnam administered 605,211 doses of the vaccine to swine at 596 farms and facilities in 34 provinces and cities, while NAVETCO provided over 51,000 doses, with more than 45,000 doses supervised.

The assessment revealed that the vaccine demonstrated a high level of efficacy, with antibodies reaching more than 94 percent, and posed no safety risks.

Following the successful vaccination, Phan Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, presented two options.

In option 1, the vaccines from both companies must meet quality requirements, including sterility, purity, safety, and effectiveness, and undergo satisfactory test results from the Central Veterinary Drug Testing Centre to be widely used and exported. Each company will need to test at least 10 consecutive batches of vaccines.

Alternatively, option 2 involves the companies taking responsibility for the quality control of all vaccine batches they produce.

Phung Duc Tien, Vietnam's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, pledged to remove obstacles and provide favourable conditions for businesses to quickly bring their products to the market for widespread use and export.

The ministry will opt to assign businesses to actively supervise the vaccination process, making them responsible for testing the quality of all vaccine batches produced. Additionally, companies will work with localities to vaccinate against ASF, as stated by Deputy Minister Tien.
