NTT launches NTT Green & Food to develop sustainable land based aquaculture systems

NTT Corporation has officially introduced NTT Green & Food Corporation, a company dedicated to utilising advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and information communications to create efficient and sustainable food production systems, especially in land-based aquaculture, Business Wire reported.

Through the implementation of carbon dioxide conversion processes, this joint venture with the Regional Fish Institute aims to address future food shortages while mitigating the environmental impacts associated with onshore seafood production.

The commercialisation of NTT Green & Food's carbon dioxide conversion system involves three key processes. The production and sale of algae will leverage NTT's technologies to optimise cultivation conditions, enabling the algae to store more carbon dioxide and enhance their growth rate. The nutrient-rich algae, containing DHA and EPA, will be supplied to aquaculture operators and farmers as feed and agricultural fertiliser.

The company plans to use the algae produced in the first process as a food source for fish, aiming to accelerate the growth rate of regional fish. By implementing breeding-improvement technology in land-based aquaculture facilities, NTT Green & Food seeks to minimise the impact of natural disasters, parasites, and infectious diseases on production.

The recycling of breeding water as nutrient-rich feed for algae will also reduce water waste. The seafood produced through this method will be supplied to distributors, wholesalers, and processors.

NTT Green & Food will develop a comprehensive land-based aquaculture system that encompasses fish and shellfish production, algae cultivation for feed, and a water purification plant for fish and shellfish excrement. The company plans to offer this system for commercial use through NTT Corporation and its operating companies.

By collaborating with local businesses in production, processing, and sales, NTT Green & Food aims to stimulate job creation, support local industries, and contribute to the development of sustainable communities.

The company also prioritises educational opportunities to promote cutting-edge aquaculture and environmental protection technologies. In addition to minimizing environmental impact, the system will reduce the risks of parasites and infectious diseases, ensuring the production of safe, secure, and high-value-added seafood.

NTT Green & Food has set ambitious revenue targets, aiming for approximately US$70 million within five years and over US$200 million within a decade.
