QuantiDoc launches Veribarr for continuous monitoring of fish mucus barriers

Norwegian biotechnology firm QuantiDoc has introduced Veribarr, a system for the continuous monitoring of mucus barriers on the skin, gills, and guts of farmed fish, with a particular focus on Atlantic salmon, Global Seafood Alliance reported.
Veribarr provides an objective and quantitative measurement of barrier strength, enabling producers to establish an early warning system for changes in fish health. By monitoring the health of the mucus barriers in a fish population, it becomes possible to document the condition of the stock and ensure its welfare.
Karin Pittman, the founder of QuantiDoc, said that documentation and continuous monitoring of health status form the foundation for making sound and sustainable decisions, both in the short and long term.
Pittman said the company's primary goal is to shift the focus from reactive treatment to proactive problem prevention to ensure the welfare of farmed fish.
The significance of continuous monitoring lies in its ability to detect potential issues well in advance of them developing into serious problems, Pittman said. Drawing on 12 years of industrial projects and research, the system can accurately predict impending conditions within the facility, assess the biological risks, and provide advice on necessary measures. This represents a shift from reactive disease and problem treatment to a proactive approach that prevents and mitigates issues.
