DEFRA to fund dairy sector US$8.5 million

The dairy industry and broadband infrastructure will benefit from GBP5.2 million (US$8.5 million) of European funding, DEFRA has announced.

The funding aims to improve the sector's competitiveness, as weak global markets hit by the economic downturn have impacted confidence in England's dairy sector.

A further GBP2.6 million (US$4.2 million) will be made available to improve broadband coverage in rural areas.

Broadband can transform jobs, communities and lives in rural areas, helping rural entrepreneurship to grow, support businesses and bring investment to rural England, said Junior DEFRA minister Jim Fitzpatrick.

The funding is subject to EU approval.
