Indonesia's school meal programme resumption lifts broiler and egg farm-gate prices as demand recovers

Broiler prices at the farm level rose 4.11% week-on-week to Rp21,736/kg as of 14 July, while egg prices edged up 0.66% to a national average of Rp22,644/kg.

The resumption of Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) programme alongside the start of the new school year has lifted farm-gate prices for broiler chickens and commercial laying hen eggs, reversing weeks of demand-driven pressure on poultry farmers.

Bapanas data shows the national average farm-gate price for live broiler chickens reached Rp21,736 per kilogram as of 14 July 2026, up 4.11% from Rp20,878/kg the previous week. Regional variation remains significant: South Sumatra recorded prices of around Rp18,125/kg, while Riau averaged Rp25,600/kg, exceeding the government's Reference Purchase Price (HAP) of Rp25,000/kg live weight.

Commercial laying hen egg prices rose 0.66% week-on-week to a national average of Rp22,644/kg. The lowest price was recorded in Banten at Rp20,300/kg and the highest in North Sulawesi at Rp28,200/kg, against a HAP of Rp26,500/kg at the farm level.

I Gusti Ketut Astawa, Deputy for Availability and Food Stabilisation at Bapanas, attributed the earlier price weakness to two compounding factors: the seasonal reduction in social events including weddings during the month of Suro, which dampened chicken and egg demand, and lower school-related procurement ahead of the new term. "So MBG has an impact. As children start going back to school and MBG begins, prices for eggs and chicken have started to rise," he said.

Ketut said he was optimistic that the combination of the end of the Suro period and growing food demand through the MBG programme would sustain the price recovery for poultry farmers nationwide.
