County in South Jeolla, South Korea, accelerates implementation of aquaculture farm cleanup project

Wando County in South Jeolla Province, South Korea, is accelerating the implementation of its aquaculture farm cleanup project to create a clean marine environment and establish a foundation for sustainable fisheries.
This project is a marine environmental conservation initiative that aims to protect the marine ecosystem and enhance farm productivity by collecting and processing waste that has settled on the sea floor during aquaculture activities.
This year, the county is allocating a total budget of ₩700 million (US$468,208) to launch the project in earnest, targeting aquaculture farms in four fishing villages: Jangjwa-ri and Daeya 1-ri in Wando-eup, Daldo-ri in Gunoe-myeon, and Modong-ri in Cheongsan-myeon, covering a total area of 632 hectares.
The county is also accepting additional applications to expand the benefits of the project to more fishing villages. Fishing village associations wishing to participate in the project can apply by visiting the fisheries or agriculture and fisheries team at their respective town or township office by July 23.
The final project sites will be selected fairly through a comprehensive review of factors such as the validity period of the fishing village association's license, the level of pollution in the farm area, whether the farm has been relocated, and the conditions of surrounding farms.
Previously, over the past five years (2021–2025), the county invested ₩2.9 billion (US$1.9 million) to collect a total of 1,061 tonnes of marine debris from 2,693 hectares of aquaculture farms across 23 fishing villages, achieving tangible results in protecting clean seas.
A county official said: "We will continue to steadily pursue various marine environmental improvement projects to preserve clean aquaculture farms and the marine environment."
