Portugal's pig farmers needed to declare animals as country seeks to control Aujeszky's disease

Pig farmers in Portugal are required to declare their animals in August, as part of measures to control Aujeszky's disease, said the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV).
"During the month of August 2024, operators of all pig farms are obliged to declare the livestock they have," according a notice published by DGAV.
As a rule, pigs also have to be declared in April, August and December.
Declarations can be made by the operator on the Institute for Agriculture and Fisheries Financing's (IFAP) portal, with Regional Food and Veterinary Services departments or farmer organisations registered with IFAP.
Pig farmers who do not comply with the measure are subject to penalties.
Aujeszky's disease affects the respiratory and reproductive systems of pigs, and can be transmitted from pigs to other animals.
