India's Tamil Nadu, Namakkal egg procurement price hits record Rs6.55 as feed costs and demand push prices higher

The National Egg Coordination Committee has revised its benchmark procurement price upward for the second time recently, with retail prices already reaching Rs8 per egg.
The National Egg Coordination Committee (NECC) has raised the benchmark egg procurement price in India's Tamil Nadu by 5 paise to a record Rs6.55 per egg, as rising poultry feed costs, steady domestic demand and export-related pressures drive prices to their highest level on record.
The revision, effective 11 July 2026, takes the procurement price - which serves as the benchmark for wholesale transactions - from Rs6.50 to Rs6.55 per egg. Retail prices have already reached approximately Rs8 per egg across most outlets in the state, with traders warning of further increases if production costs continue to rise.
Industry representatives attributed the price pressure to higher costs for maize and soybean meal, the primary feed ingredients in poultry production. Feed accounts for the largest share of egg production costs, making raw material price movements a key determinant of procurement rates. Ongoing conflict in West Asia has contributed additional volatility to input costs and logistics.
Tamil Nadu is one of India's leading egg-producing states, with Namakkal serving as the country's largest egg production and export hub. Price revisions by the NECC influence market trends not only within Tamil Nadu but also in several other regions that rely on the state's poultry industry for supply. Traders said egg prices are likely to remain elevated in the near term unless raw material availability improves or production costs ease.
