Indonesia's Kebumen area-based shrimp farm breaks into US export market

The BUBK Kebumen project in Central Java has been highlighted by lawmakers as a model for modern, community-integrated shrimp cultivation at national scale.

The Kebumen Area-Based Shrimp Farming project in Indonesia's Central Java province has achieved export market access to the United States while meeting domestic demand, according to House of Representatives Commission IV lawmaker Darori Wonodipuro, who attended the facility's harvest event on 11 July 2026.

Darori said BUBK Kebumen has demonstrated high productivity and serves as evidence of the potential to develop modern, area-based shrimp farming at scale. The facility has also created employment for residents of surrounding villages, with its entire workforce drawn from nearby communities.

He called for BUBK Kebumen to be maintained and further developed as a strategic asset for Indonesia's national fisheries sector, and urged continued coordination between local, provincial and central government authorities to support its growth.

Darori said expanding the area-based shrimp cultivation model could raise national fishery output, strengthen food self-sufficiency and generate broader employment opportunities for coastal and rural communities.
