UK shellfish bodies form partnership

The Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) and the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers (ASSG) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The MOU outlines plans for cooperation on a variety of areas, including domestic legislation affecting those engaged in the harvesting and cultivation of shellfish, European legislation through the European Mollusc Producers Association (EMPA), activities that impacts upon shellfish cultivation and harvesting, and scientific knowledge and developments that have a bearing on shellfish in the wild, their cultivation and their harvesting.

The two Associations recognise that there are many aspects of their activities in which they and their members have common interests and aims. They believe that advantages can and will accrue to them and to their members by working together in fields of common concern.

"Our planned partnership presents a range of potential benefits to the UK shellfish cultivation industry," said SAGB Director Tom Pickerell. "Just a few examples are the sharing of knowledge and experience and the development and pursuit of common views and approaches on specific issues."

Walter Speirs, ASSG Chairman, added: "The MOU not only provides the opportunity for mutual support and dual representation, it also avoids duplication of effort and cost. As we work more and more with devolved responsibilities, it also gives us a platform to ensure that we have a level playing field across the UK for our members. While our joint efforts will benefit both organisations, the real winner will be the shellfish cultivation industry,"
