Canada invests US$20 million into traceability system

Canada's government has invested US$20 million to create a traceability path that can link the grocery store product to Canadian livestock.

Strengthening Canada's traceability system will make it easier for producers to get credit and premium prices for the production of meat products, and can help to protect the security of the food supply by tracking down a potential problem before it can spread, said Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

That in turn, can help Canada open up new markets worldwide, said the Minister.

Quebec and Alberta are implementing their own traceability initiatives and the government wants to build on that by helping all regions to build a national system, said Minister of National Revenue and Minister of State (Agriculture) Jean-Pierre Blackburn.
