Vietnam Finds H5N1 Virus In Poultry Tests

Vietnam said on Tuesday poultry samples from the country's south had been found infected by the lethal H5N1 bird flu virus. But officials have controlled the disease which killed 16 people earlier this year.

"Test results from random samples showed the fowls were infected with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza," said Bui Quang Anh, director of the agriculture ministry's animal health department.

"The virus was the leftover from the previous outbreak because of our incomplete treatment of the infected farms."

Anh told Reuters the H5N1 finding came three days ago and about 10,000 poultry, mostly chickens, in the Mekong Delta provinces had been culled.

Vietnamese officials said last month preliminary tests found only the H5 strain of the virus.
