Indonesia implements pilot project for saline tilapia cultivation

Indonesia's Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has launched a pilot project aimed at cultivating saline tilapia in a 16-hectare area in Karawang, West Java, Antara reported.

Saline tilapia, a versatile species that can thrive in both freshwater and saltwater environments, is expected to play a significant role in stimulating the local economy and improving community welfare.

Haeru Rahayu, Indonesia's Director General of Aquaculture Fisheries, said that the project's objective is to position tilapia as a strategic commodity for Indonesia's future. With a growing demand for tilapia fillets, the cultivation of saline tilapia holds great potential.

M. Tahang, head of the Karawang Fisheries Production Business Services Centre, highlighted efforts to boost the production of saline tilapia seeds. It is projected that the project could yield approximately 672 tons of tilapia over a rearing period of 150-180 days, potentially generating around IDR 20 billion (~US$1.3 million; IDR 10,000 = US$0.67) in total income, assuming an average price of IDR 30,000 (~US$2) per kg.

Tahang also said that the saline tilapia cultivation project prioritizes ecological considerations. By taking into account environmental factors, the initiative aims to ensure sustainable and responsible aquaculture practices.

Indonesia is the fifth-largest global exporter of tilapia.
