Vietnam's meat imports valued over US$480 million in first five months
Vietnam has recorded an increase in meat imports, surpassing 239,000 tonnes valued at US$480 million during the initial five months of this year, according to the General Department of Customs of Vietnam, Saigon News reported.
The quantity of meat imports saw a modest rise of approximately 1.6%, while the value experienced a decline of 9.1% compared to the same period last year.
In May, Vietnam imported 57,620 tonnes of meat, amounting to US$108.8 million. This reflects a 9.5% increase in volume but a 10.2% decrease in value year-on-year.
This marks the fourth consecutive month of growth in meat and meat product imports. During this period, Vietnam sourced meat from over 36 markets, with the top five suppliers being the US, India, Russia, Brazil, and Poland.
Notably, imports of meat from Russia have shown a steady upward trend following a decline in 2022. The main types of imported meat include poultry and offal, as well as fresh chilled or frozen pork and beef. While imports of chilled or frozen poultry and offal from pigs, buffaloes, and cattle have been on the rise, there has been a decrease in pork and beef imports compared to the previous year.
From January to May 2023, Vietnam imported 29,610 tonnes of fresh chilled or frozen pork, with a total value of US$73.62 million. This represents a decline of 19.9% in volume and 5.7% in value.
