Nine new members join Salmon Scotland
Nine new members, including fish health experts, the world's largest wellboat operator, and hybrid energy specialists, have joined Salmon Scotland, the body representing the Scottish salmon industry, Fish Information & Services reported.
The new members are Elanco, Fjord Maritime, O'Toole Transport, PatoGen Ltd, Sølvtrans, STIM, Sundolitt Ltd, Vónin, and World Feeds Ltd.
The body now has 33 members following continued sector growth and a makeover to reflect its enormous contribution to the larger economy through the supply chain.
Many of the new members are recognised innovators in technology, demonstrating the organization's dedication to a low-carbon future while meeting important goals for fish health and welfare and upholding the highest food quality standards.
After the inaugural meeting of the new Scottish Aquaculture Council in June, the move takes place at a critical juncture for the industry.
Additionally, Salmon Scotland recently welcomed industry leaders Jarl van den Berg, general manager of Hendrix Genetics, Ben Wilson, managing director of Mull-based Inverlussa Marine Services, and Alex MacInnes, director of Skye's Organic Sea Harvest, to its expanded board.
In November 2021, Salmon Scotland, formerly known as the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation, changed its name. In April 2022, it announced the addition of 12 new members.
While Shetland, Orkney, the north-west Highlands, the Western Isles, and Argyll and Bute are among the locations where Scottish salmon is farm-raised, the most recent expansion includes Scottish, UK, and foreign businesses, solidifying the industry's reputation for excellence and global reach.
10,000 Scottish jobs depend on the sector, which directly employs 2,500 people in vulnerable coastal communities in rural Scotland.
Overseas sales of salmon from Scotland increased to GBP 614 million (~US$731 million; GBP 1 = US$1.19) last year, making it the UK's largest fresh food export. Sales in stores in the UK reached GBP 1.1 billion (~US$1.3 billion) in 2021, as consumers ate more protein-rich fish.
