Malaysian farmers urge government to provide subsidy for eggs
The Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) has urged the Malaysian government to establish a subsidy for eggs at MYR 0.08 (~US$0.018; MYR 1 = US$0.23) per egg, to help the egg farming sector and ensure food security, The Star reported.
The FLFAM said they requested the subsidy due to soaring input costs, which includes higher costs for feed, raw materials, transportation, as well as labour issues.
Malaysia's Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry recently announced controlled farm prices for Grade A chicken eggs at MYR 0.41 (~US$0.092), Grade B at MYR 0.39 (~US$0.088) and Grade C at MYR 0.37. (~US$0.083). The ceiling price was fixed at MYR 0.45 (~US$0.10), MYR 0.43 (~US$0.097) and MYR 0.41 (~US$0.092) respectively.
The FLFAM also thanked the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry for supporting the farming sector with financial aid. They said the subsidies provided will help farmers survive and overcome losses.
Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Malaysia Finance Minister, announced additional subsidies of MYR 370 million (~US$83.3 million) has been allocated for chicken and eggs in July and August.
