The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Diamond V's Original Product the functional claim "… helps support the dry matter intake (DMI) of dairy cows when fed as part of a total mixed ration during the first 70 days of lactation", making it the only company in the category with an FDA accepted functional claim for DMI.
Original Product has been known to increase DMI during the critical early lactation phaseand increasing DMI has many benefits for the dairy cow, while contributing to greater dairy profitability.
Together, DMI and the diet's net energy concentration determine the cow's total energy intake. Because energy intake is the primary driver of milk yield in the first 70 days postpartum, when milk production increases rapidly, the inclusion of Diamond V Original Product in the total mixed ration (TMR) supports the cow's metabolic demands when she needs support most.
Increases in DMI during early lactation are associated with: reducing the impact and severity of negative energy balance (NEB) around calving; improved liver function leading to increased availability and conversion of propionate to glucose, a key driver of milk synthesis; higher peak milks; and increases in total lactation milk production.
Reproduction efficiency improves when energy intake is sufficient during early lactation for: shorter intervals to first ovulation and first estrus; reduced incidence of silent estrus; higher first service conception rates; fewer days open; and shorter calving intervals.
Overall cow health benefits profoundly too due to reductions in the incidence of metabolic disease, example milk fever and displaced abomasums, during the critical transition phase. The incidence and severity of the metabolic diseases of early lactation can be reduced by alleviating excessive body fat mobilisation through increased DMI.
