Nepali dairy products gain market foothold in India
Dairy products from Nepal are getting popular in India, with around 3,000-4,000 litres of milk produced by Biratnagar Milk Distribution Project being sold in Indian markets on a daily basis.
Business is brisk during festivals and marriages. Ghee and yogurt manufactured in Nepal are also sold like hot cakes. Nepali dairy products have carved a niche in Farbisgunj, Arariya, Purnia, Katihar, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Kishangunj, Bhagalpur, Madheapura in Bihar. The eastern dairy body sells two types of milk - standard and cream.
"We collect 12,000 litres of standard and 4,000 litres of cream milk daily from markets in Sunsari and Morang," said Ram Autar Mandal, chief of the milk distribution project. The milk project also produces lassi, panir and ice-cream.
It collects 42,000 litres of milk daily through 11 cold centres in Koshi, Mechi and Saptari.
