Ukraine ups 2006 grain harvest forecast to 40 million tonnes

Ukraine 2006 grain harvest is likely to be 40-41 million tonnes and not 38 million tonnes as forecast, the agriculture ministry said Wednesday (Jul 12).

Taking into account the grain leftover from the previous marketing year, Ukraine will have 43 million tonnes of grain in the current marketing year, the ministry said.

According to the ministry, the damage to crops caused by adverse weather conditions and the planting campaign during the winter is not as great as was feared.

The ministry also forecast grain exports in the 2006-2007 marketing year of 13 million tonnes, roughly equal to the amount exported in the previous marketing year.

In 2005, Ukraine harvested just over 38 million tonnes of grain.
