Australia's May wheat, durum exports up 9% from April

Australia exported 3,326,244 tonnes of wheat and durum in May, up 9% from the 3,046,128 tonnes shipped in April, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

According to Lachstock Consulting's latest wheat supply-and-demand report published on June 22, Australia has exported 19.5 million tonnes of wheat since the October 1, the start of the current marketing year. This compares with 15.6 million tonnes shipped over the corresponding 2021-22 period.

"We do expect exports to taper as Northern Hemisphere crops hit the supply chain and east coast supply begins to tighten, but we are well on our way to a record export programme estimated at over 30Mt by the end of September 2023," the Lachstock report said.

"Export pace out of Western Australia is humming, with over 1Mt being exported each month for the last five months in a row, taking the marketing year to date total to a record 7.23Mt.

"Export pace out of New South Wales has been record high at 3.97Mt, just ahead of last year's 3.93Mt."
