Vietnam table egg prices rebound sharply after months-long slump

Supply tightened as smaller producers cut flocks or exited during the downturn, but farmers say margins remain thin even as prices recover.
Farm-gate prices for commercially produced chicken eggs in southern Vietnam have climbed to VND1,800-2,100 (US$0.068-0.080) per egg, an increase of VND200-900 from lows recorded in May and June. The rebound follows a prolonged decline that had pushed many producers into losses, marking a sharp reversal after months of continuous price weakness.
Egg prices in the region have swung sharply over the past year. Prices peaked at VND2,600-2,800 (US$0.099-0.106) per egg in 2025 amid strong demand, prompting many farmers to expand flocks or open new farms. The resulting oversupply drove prices down sharply in subsequent months, before the current partial recovery.
Industry representatives attributed the latest increase to reduced supply after sustained losses forced smaller farms to cut flock sizes or exit production altogether. Truong Chi Thien, general director of Vinh Thanh Dat Company in Ho Chi Minh City, said the rebound had been anticipated and could extend further as supply continues to tighten.
A representative from a livestock company in Tay Ninh province, identified only as Mr Minh, said his firm's output had remained stable, but demand from buyers had risen faster than supply could match. He attributed this to bankruptcies and herd reductions among smaller producers, which concentrated demand on remaining production units.
Despite the price recovery, production costs remain a constraint on profitability. Nguyen Duc Binh, a farmer in Dong Nai province, said the cost of producing a commercial egg currently averages VND1,600 (US$0.061), rising further at lower productivity levels, leaving farmers with only modest margins even at current prices. Prices in southern Vietnam also remain about VND100 (US$0.004) per egg lower than in the north, according to Lam Thuy Ai, general director of Mebi Farm.
Ai said elevated feed costs continue to weigh on layer farming margins, though the clearing of previously discounted low-quality stock has helped rebalance the market. Retail prices in Ho Chi Minh City have risen accordingly, with eggs sold at markets for VND24,000-28,000 (US$0.91-1.06) per dozen and at supermarkets for VND27,000-34,000 (US$1.03-1.29) per dozen, though some retailers continue to offer promotional discounts.
