UAE gets 4,500 dairy cows from Uruguay

The United Arab Emirate has recently bolstered its food security which was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by bringing in 4,500 dairy cows from Uruguay, Bloomberg reported in early July.

The shipment of Holstein cattle is the first of many and represents "a perfect step in strengthening the country's efforts to enhance local production," according to Mariam Almheiri, UAE's minister of state for food security.

The UAE, like other Gulf states, are dependent on food imports as their arid climates make crop and livestock productions challenging.

To ensure supply in the midst of the pandemic, a food-security council coordinates official efforts, including the stockpiling of essential goods.
