UK rejects 1,400 tonnes of Brazilian poultry shipments over 15 months

The United Kingdom had turned away 16 containers of poultry from Brazil due to the presence of salmonella in the shipments, the Brazilian government confirmed last week.

Over 15 months, shipments amounting to a total 1,400 tonnes of poultry were returned to Brazil, according to the country's agriculture minister, Tereza Cristina Dias. The confirmation of this development came following the publishing of a story about the matter on a local website. Some of these shipments, the article stated, belonged to JBS and BRF Foods.

The products were also sold in Brazil after the UK's rejection, the story alleged. According to Xinhua, Brazil has a higher maximum limit for traces of salmonella than European Union nations.

The final destination of the poultry sent back is the responsibility of meatpacking companies, and if the product complies with Brazilian regulations, it can be sold in the country, said Dias.
