CCPA Group adopts Sustell farm-gate modelling platform to drive livestock decarbonisation

The French animal nutrition cooperative is using life cycle assessment data to help feed manufacturers and livestock farmers quantify and reduce their carbon footprints.
The CCPA Group has adopted Sustell®, the environmental modelling platform developed by dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health, as a strategic tool for supporting its customers' decarbonisation efforts across animal production sectors.
The decision, taken in 2024, positions CCPA to offer farm-gate carbon footprint assessments based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology aligned with international standards including FAO and PEF frameworks. The Sustell platform evaluates environmental impacts by considering the entire production system - feed, animal performance, farming practices and other inputs.
"The decarbonisation of livestock production sectors first and foremost relies on the ability to measure in order to act. Through environmental modelling, we help our customers objectively assess the impact of their nutritional and technical choices and identify the most effective levers to reconcile environmental, economic and zootechnical performance," said Marina Panhéleux, Sustainability R&I Manager at the CCPA Group.
Using Sustell, CCPA is able to quantify CO₂ emissions at the farm gate, compare nutritional scenarios and identify solutions optimised for environmental, technical and economic performance. Based on scenarios developed by its Technical and R&I teams, the company said these levers can enable carbon footprint reductions of up to 15% (kg CO₂ eq./kg of animal product at the farm gate).
Several CCPA nutritional solutions have already undergone third-party-verified life cycle assessments. Turboviv® delivers a 6.9% reduction in climate change impact per kg of milk alongside a 3.1% improvement in feed efficiency, with a return on investment of 4-5:1. Feedstim® Dairy achieves a 5.5% reduction per kg of milk with a 6.7% increase in milk production, returning 3-5:1. Butirex® C4 delivers a 3.1% reduction per kg of live broiler with a 3.5% improvement in organic matter digestibility and an ROI of 5-8:1.
The CCPA Group said generating reliable environmental data is also an essential prerequisite for the credibility of environmental labelling for animal products, enabling producers to provide consumers with transparent and verifiable information.
